Ken Min Lau (Chinese Malaysian, Australian, b.1981) is an abstract artist and graphic designer who explores the inner workings of biomechanical designs and contemplates the movement and function of otherworldly creations.
Ken’s artistic journey was ignited by his father, an abstract painter who introduced him to the captivating world of anime & sci-fi culture. The fluidity and meticulously detailed action scenes in Akira and the organic mecha designs of Evangelion would leave a lasting imprint on his artistic style. Growing up amidst the natural wonder of Australia, Ken was allured to sandstone rock formations' intricate patterns and unique shapes. These towering pillars and eroding shard structures silhouetted the sky and captivated his imagination.
These influential encounters led Ken to experiment with deconstructing organic silhouetted forms and Japanese Mecha designs. His works feature a symphony of fragmented exoskeletal armour, iris mechanisms, and transforming fins. His vibrant colour palette and dynamic linework evoke the essence of Japanese anime, infusing his artwork with energy and accentuating the sense of movement within the objects.
Ken invites the viewer to contemplate the functionality and movement of the forms captured in his works. Each work is a snapshot of an extensive mechanical system in perpetual motion.
